For scenery that will take your breath away - Lake Bogoria outshines any other location in Kenya. J.W. Gregory, who travelled on foot from Mombasa over 100 years ago and formulated his theory for the creation of the Rift Valley, described it as "the most beautiful view in Africa".
One of a chain of lakes situated in the northernmost region and covering 30 kms2, the soda lake is rich with algae, drawing numerous Greater and Lesser Flamingos, which carpet its shores with a bright pink hue. Not a regular on common itineraries, especially the one-weekers, due to the small number of mammals, "twitchers" will be assured of sightings, with Vultures, Bustards, Larks and Fish Eagles soaring overhead - the dramatic walls of the Siracho Range stretching out in the distance.
A volcanic region, the lake has plenty more excitement in store, geysers (hot springs) erupting from the lake, the ground waters heated by rising magmas and hot rocks. You may have to take a rain check on the skinny-dipping, but time spent at the national reserve is akin to a free day-spa, as you can literally soak up the serenity and solitude. It's also one of the best places to catch sight of the rare Greater Kudu, and don't be surprised if a troop of Baboons or a herd of Zebra, pop by for a visit.
