Navigate your way to Lake Nakuru: One of the best places to spot the Leopard, bird action you can't beat and a chance to do your bit for animal preservation.
Dubbed "the world's greatest bird spectacle" by renowned ornithologist Roger Peterson, at Lake Nakuru there are bright pink Flamingos as far as the eye can see - between one and two million feeding around the shallow soda lake in peak season (the European winter). The Flamingos, however, are not the only attraction, as Pelicans and Cormorants, Little Grebes and White Winged Black Terns are also frequently seen, as are Stilts, Avocets, and Ducks.
Not wanting to do a disservice to other members of the animal kingdom - Lake Nakuru is best summed up as a birders paradise with plenty of mammals thrown in for good measure. The national park, which covers an area of 160kms2 serves up great wildlife action both in the skies and on the ground, and a safari here offers one of the best chances to spot the Leopard in Kenya. Other residents include the Lion, Warthog, Waterbuck, Impala and Hippo, their slightly shyer counterparts, the Rothschild Giraffe, Eland, and White Rhino also putting in the occasional appearance.
When you're not exploring the forests, cliffs and waterfalls beyond the lake, you can even do your bit for animal preservation, as Lake Nakuru National Park, is a sanctuary for the Black Rhino, and home to one of the largest concentrations in the country.
It's responsible travel all the way with Acacia Adventure Holidays, but if you have your heart set on Lake Nakuru National Park, then opt for the 14-day Gorilla Encounter overland trip, and get closer to the animal kingdom.
