Take off to Lake Turkana: An exercise in desert survival and a chance to get snap happy with the largest population of Crocs in Africa...
Lake Turkana - home to the largest populations of Crocodile in Africa - www.acacia-africa.com
Arid and geographically inaccessible, Lake Turkana, has a truly wild character - sudden and violent storms, and the merciless hot wind bringing the region to life. Also known as the "Jade Sea" - this windswept expanse of water, and the largest desert lake in the world, constantly shifts from blue to green in the hazy daylight. Its remoteness was captured in John Le Carré's African thriller; "The Constant Gardener", the desolate and rocky desert region interspersed with flat-topped Acacia's and twisted thorn trees.
Lake Turkana might sound like an exercise in desert survival, but despite the harsh climate a surprising number of tribal groups have been able to adjust to the desert heat, including the Rendille, Gabra, El Molo, and of course, the Turkana. Evidence of even earlier inhabitants was unearthed in 1967, by Richard Leakey, who discovered the "Koobi Fora" fossil site - the arid expanse now a protected pre-historic research area.
Fascinating geology and history aside you can still expect some great wildlife viewing within the barren landscape: Lake Turkana, housing the largest population of Crocs in Africa - Hippo, Gerenuk, Giraffe, Lion, Hyena and Cheetah also gracing its shores.
