The wildlife can't be guaranteed on any safari, but with one game viewer claiming to see Elephant, Leopard, Lion and Cheetah all in one drive - you'll know that the Samburu Game Reserve is going to offer up a sensational safari. Dramatic, rugged and remote, this wilderness is a magnet for anyone looking to escape the crowds - and likewise a big attraction for the animals, which venture here in droves.

Established in 1985, and situated on the hot and arid fringes of Kenya's vast Northern Frontier district, Samburu is one of the few wildlife viewing locations boasting frequent Leopard sightings - the 165 kms reserve also occupied by Buffalo, Lion, Cheetah and Crocodile. However, its real claim to fame relates to the various species of game, unique to the northern parks, including the Beisa Oryx, the Long Necked Gerenuk, Grevy's Zebra, the Reticulated Giraffe and the Blue Shanked Somali Ostrich.

The Samburu Game Reserve's permanent water source and lifeline, is the Ewaso Nyrio River. A regular haunt for the Elephants, they bathe and frolic in the muddied waters during the heat of the day, before leaving to gorge on the lush vegetation of the riverine forest. Inspiring, simply in terms of its location - volcanic mountains, gaunt hills and withered scrub tree fill the sparse terrain, clusters of desert rose and the resident Samburu Tribe providing bursts of vivid colour in an otherwise arid desert land.

Safari without the crowds and you can catch up with the wildlife in the Samburu Game Reserve on Acacia Adventure Holidays' 7-day Kenyan Wildlife Safari - a NEW small group safari.
