Anselm Croze

Age

42.

Your talent

Glass artist.

Where you're from?

Oloosirkon, Kajiado.

Why did you get interested in art?

Art runs in the family. My grand and great grandparents on both sides were artists. I guess you could say I fell into glass by accident, but I have never looked back.

What are you up to now?

I'm working on what will probably be the largest chandelier in Africa, for a lodge in Tanzania.

What was your best exhibition and why?

My first exhibition - I guess about 150 or so people came.

Is there any place in Kenya that inspires you in terms of your art?

Any place in Kenya with 360-degree horizons.

What do you love about the Kenyan people?

Their humour, pragmatism and resilience.

If you could pick your dream wildlife destination in Kenya - where would it be and what would you get up to there?

I would be watching the annual migration in the Maasai Mara from a helicopter.

Your best piece of art and why?

The 60-foot dome I worked on - containing 1,050 stars. All accurately positioned to reflect the constellations in the night sky. I like it because it is a functional sculpture.

How does it feel to be in Kenya now - what are travellers missing out on?

Excellent - you should definitely be here.

Can you give adventurers the inside track on travel in your home destination - what should they bring to Kenya?

Bring a torch and also any lumbar support, if required - for those long journeys.

What would be the first words you'd utter to a tourist if you hooked up with them on the street, and where's the first place you'd take them in downtown Nairobi?

"Karibu" (Welcome) - after which I'd take them to my studio to open their eyes.
