Kenya is a melting pot of talent, as evidenced by the regular WAPI events held at the British Council in Nairobi, which bring underground artists into the mainstream.
WAPI, (Words and Pictures) is a new partner in the Crazy About Kenya project, several of the organisation's musicians coming on board to promote the diversity of the wildlife capital; including Muthoni, Grandmaster Masese and Liz Ogumbo.
While many travellers might associate Kenya with the Big Five, at WAPI it's the poets, models, fashion designers, musicians and graffiti artists, who are the central attraction. For the majority of underground talent showcased at the event, this is their first step into the limelight, but on occasion you can expect some global glitterati, UK rapper, Black Twang, recently sharing the stage.
Certainly a crowd pleaser it's usual for groups of between 2,000 to 4,500 people to attend, so there's definitely a positively charged atmosphere. And for those of us who have come down to earth with a loud bump at the end of the festival season, knowing that WAPI runs year round is certainly a comforting thought.
Only ten to fifteen minutes from central Nairobi the afternoon events are the ideal aperitif to an evening in the cosmopolitan capital, so put on those dancing shoes and get with the cultural Kenyan vibe at WAPI.
Future monthly WAPI events will run on October 18, November 15 and December 13. Acacia Adventure Holidays offers 3-day city stays in Nairobi so you can catch up with the wildlife and party non-stop in the capital.
Check out future events and highlights from WAPI and the British Council on Facebook: WAPI (WORDS AND PICTURES). Event dates subject to change.
